This seminar will focus on the subjects below:

Week 1- What is ‘intellectual history’ and why should one study it.

            European intellectual history, Frenchrevolution, Enlightenment, etc

            Alternative intellectual histories, Islamic, Ottoman Empire, India

            Ways at looking at sources, newspapers, images, maps.

Week 2- Muslim intellectual ideas - from the nineteenth century.-

             Ideas, history, context

             Young Ottomans, Muhammad Abduh, Muhammad Iqbal Decline?

             Re-look at ulema, Islamist and Ottoman narratives from

             more contemporary positions that challenge the existing

             theories of the East.

Week 3- Alternative narratives - Edward Said - Orientalism,

              Revisionism - Is there a need to revise?

              Reform and Constitutionalism and modernity,

              how do we tackle these ideas?

              Continuity or change? History of ideas, recap
