His first book, Persian Postcards: Iran after Khomeini, was published in 1994 by Vancouver-based independent Talonbooks. His second book, Salonica Terminus, also published by Talonbooks, appeared in 1996. It was followed in 1999 by Anatolia Junction, which focuses on the life and times of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, one of the most significant figures in the Turkish Islamic movement. In 2000, he co-authored with Massoumeh Ebtekar, vice-president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Takeover in Tehran—the Inside Story of the 1979 U.S. Embassy Capture.
 
Shattered Images, an exploration of modern Syria via the iconoclast movement, was published in 2004 by Talonbook. It is currently being translated into French, Turkish and Arabic.
 
Fred A. Reed has pursued a parallel career as a literary translator, from Modern Greek and French into English. From Greek he has translated works by Nikos Kazantzakis, Kostas Mourselas, Dido Soteriou, Yorgos Ioannou, Pavlos Matesis and Vangelis Raptopoulos. From French, Thierry Hentsch,Yves Beauchemin, Sergio Kokis, Martine Desjardins and Monique Proulx. He has three times won the Governor General’s Literary Award for translation, Canada’s highest distinction, most recently for his translation of Thierry Hentsch’s masterwork, Truth or Death, in 2005.
